Harmon: Business, Not Personal In Chicago
History, legacy and empire-building …. and taking negotiations public in a bad way.
That’s what we saw on Thursday when long-rumored discussions about the Bears potentially leaving Soldier Field for suburban Arlington Heights. Bears brass confirmed a bid on the site of Arlington Park (truly a gorgeous facility for horse racing spectators and bettors for years), and Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot decided to go on the offensive.
Citing a long lease with the city of Chicago and her fandom as a season ticket holder, Lightfoot attacked the team’s public “negotiation” and even the on-field performance (conveniently forgetting or omitting two postseason appearances in the past three seasons).
Either way, I felt compelled to ramble on a bit after we closed up shop this evening. Clearly, there’s a time and place for better lighting and general aesthetics. But damn, Ringo looks glorious.
Here’s the rant that marinated. No notes. Just a bit off the cuff as the morning hours came on the West Coast.
Like Nino Brown (brilliantly portrayed by Wesley Snipes in “New Jack City”) reminds us:
“Always business. Never personal.”
