College Football Begins In Grand Fashion

On Thursday, we celebrated the beginning of a glorious new season of football.

In the NFL, we witnessed the final performances of the preseason slate. Most stars stood around in ball caps while waving to the crowd.

Collegiate players took to the gridiron for games that counted, and none was more celebrated that Jim Harbaugh’s first game at coach of the Michigan Wolverines. Harbaugh’s Wolverines lost at Utah by a 24-17 final score as quarterback Jake Rudock misfired high much of the day and threw a game-clinching interception that was returned for a touchdown.

The Michigan-Utah tilt was a veritable red carpet event with Gus Johnson on the call and Colin Cowherd appeared as part of the pre- and post-game shows.  It was the big game of the day, bolstered by months of hype surrounding Harbaugh’s return to his alma mater. And the game as a whole didn’t disappoint, but it didn’t quite match the drama of an earlier finish in Orlando. Ron Turner and the Florida International Panthers entered the game as heavy underdogs, but held serve on the road against Central Florida. The Panthers finished things off in dramatic fashion in the final minute with a blocked field goal.
