FMC for August 15: Mike Williams

I’m not going to belabor the point and bring back the long-winded diatribes that I’ve offered in the past about Mike Williams’ issues with the NCAA and that horrible limbo he was placed into before finally getting drafted by the Lions. I know. He was still a top pick, got major bank and so on … Still, you can’t tell me that his 18 months on the couch playing Madden instead of being in a camp — college or pro — didn’t impact his ultimate struggles (failures) in previous stops.

Williams has been reunited with his college coach, Pete Carroll. He’s been working hard in camp & reports have been positive since he was signed early this off-season. On Saturday night, Williams recorded one catch in the Seahawks’ preseason game … a 51-yard touchdown sprint that you couldn’t watch five minutes of sports highlights without seeing, particularly if you live in southern California.

Will Williams ultimately find his way into the mix for this receiving corps? There’s certainly an opportunity behind T.J. Houshmandzadeh, rookie Golden Tate and Deion Branch (not to mention tight end John Carlson). He showed a burst on the touchdown sprint that we haven’t seen in years. Either way, in between contract squabbles, myriad injury updates and that whole thing with No. 4 in Minnesota, it’s always good to have a bit of a feel-good story in the mix.
