On Sunday night, Bob Costas used his halftime commentary segment to address the Jovan Belcher tragedy in Kansas City. He quoted a Jason Whitlock column in his segment, and there was a tremendous backlash to his statements. Whitlock, long a writer for The Kansas City Star and current FOXSports.com columnist, had addressed the “gun culture of America” in a column written in response to Saturday’s events. Whitlock elaborates on his point, citing “the irresponsibility of the macho male society,” within the podcast.
The piece Bob Costas referenced on Sunday night can be read here.
“I would argue that your rationalizations speak to how numb we are in this society to gun violence and murder. We’ve come to accept our insanity. We’d prefer to avoid seriously reflecting upon the absurdity of the prevailing notion that the second amendment somehow enhances our liberty rather than threatens it.” – Jason Whitlock
I urge you to give the podcast a listen: Bob Costas and Jason Whitlock Discuss Costas’ Sunday Night Football Commentary. The format allows Costas and Whitlock to further examine the issue and elaborate their points, putting Saturday’s tragedy into focus while clarifying the Second Amendment aspect of the discussion.
Jen Engel of FOXSports.com issued a response to Whitlock’s column and Costas’ in-game comments in her latest post on FOXSports.com.
Costas also spoke with The New York Times , as relayed by The Hollywood Reporter
